Marijuana Strain Review: O.G. Kush #1

O.G. Kush

Medical Marijuana : O.G. Kush #1

Medical Marijuana : O.G. Kush

Physical Exam:

Visual Appeal: 8 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Bud Density: 8 (1-10 / airy-dense)
Aroma Intensity: 7 (1-10 / subtle-intense)
Seed Content: 1 (1-10 / none-fully seeded)
Colours Present in Buds: 7 Green / 4 Gold / 3 White / 5 Orange / 2 Red / 1 Purple (1-10 / light-dark)
Present Aromas: 4 Skunk / 5 Hash / 2 Floral / 7 Musk / 5 Diesel / 7 Pine (freshly cracked bud | 1-10 / weak-potent)

Comments:

Hearing the Original Gangster would be in my sample set I got extremely excited. I’ve enjoyed numerous crosses of the O.G., so the opportunity to test/enjoy where it all came from just couldn’t be passed up! Once again shipped over from British Columbia in an air-tight container, these buds varied in size from a few grams to 0.2g popcorns. Fairly dense and very well cured, the pale stems rate high on the snappability scale (yea I made that up, so what?) and don’t account for much weight. Trichomes are interesting,  coverage inside the buds is much better than on the surface, but there is enough overall to remind me of a pine-tree with morning frost. The smell doesn’t quite jump out and grab you until ripping the plant apart, at which point one of the deepest, richest, spiciest kush smells I’ve ever experienced slaps you upside the olfactory.

Efficacy Testing:

Utensils Used: The Oracle Infrared Vaporizer (2x Standard Vapor Bag)
Dosage: 0.5g
Sativa Effect: 4 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Indica Effect: 8 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Effect Onset: 3 (1-10 / immediate-creeper)
Potency: 8 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Taste: 8 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Tolerance Build up: 2 (1-10 / none-rapid)
Effect Duration: ≈2 hours
Usability: 3 Morning / 3 Day & Work / 8 Evening / 9 Night (1-10 / worst-ideal time of day)

Comments:

I’m really glad to be writing this review when I am because for the past week my back has been acting up, causing me a lot of pain and making me one cranky asshole to be around. After a few meetings and the day’s nonsense online I finally cleared some time for myself (and science!) to medicate and enjoy the effects of this well known indica. Sitting down on the couch with my .5 and my Oracle Infrared Vaporizer, I dug right in without hesitation. The sample broke up relatively well in my plastic grinder, providing enough dry biomass to generously fill the bowl twice.

BAG 1:
Set the temperature knob to about 3′o’clock, loaded the bowl, put the straight-stack adapter in place, and hit the button. Just under 3 minutes later the bag was swelling with moderately thick vapor, (“London Fog” as my friend Matt would say”) and ready to medicate even the crankiest of assholes. The first few hauls are really tasty; a deep green, musty, and resiny flavour for lack of better descriptors… Part way through my phone rang, and didn’t make me angry, so there is something to be said about O.G.’s effects as an anti-depressant/mood elevator. By the end of the vapor bag (and phone call) I can feel a calming buzz behind my eyes, but my back is still making it’s anger known (especially during coughs). Cleared the bowl, got prepped for round 2.

BAG 2:
Same settings and load out, don’t fix it if it ain’t broke is a pretty good rule to follow because the first bag relaxed me and improved my mood significantly, and got me thinking towards meal choices for rapidly approaching dinner. There was a bit of appetite stimulus happening for sure, but I kept my head in the game ’cause this is about the weed.  The bag filled with a much thicker vapor, nearly opaque. The depth of flavour really came through and forced my eyes to a near squint. No cough until the last hit (which happens all the time, and I think is due in part to the vacuum created when the bag is depleted) but the feeling through my back muscles was distinctly changed, not quite as sharp, and no longer at the forefront of my mind. The weight on my temples and eyes tapered off after about 20 minutes and I was left in a much improved mood.

Conclusion: 8.5/10

Excellence award of some kind. I’d give it one. I understand why these genetics have been used for crosses so often, the resulting buds always seem to be extremely potent with indica dominant effects, even if the genetics come from an unknown (likely Chemdog) source. Immediately after my vaporizer session writing became labored, so I moved to the couch and spent a solid 40 minutes in a very calm haze, zoned into the HDTV and getting a couple laughs in. My back & other muscles eased away from the ‘near-spasm’ state they were in as well, absolutely coming through when I needed it. I fully recommend this strain for medicinal use, it covers all the bases in a great, positive way.

Medical Marijuana : O.G. Kush #1

Note: I recently tried Quadruple O.G. Kush which is likely an inbred project from this, but as usual details are hazy. Chasing down the lineage of strains can be a very difficult task considering the nature of the beast, but through an hour or so of research I found a thread that might shed some light…

‘OG Kush’ (the original cut) came from an s1 from in a bag of ’91 Chemdawg in the Lake Tahoe area in 1996

I take no claim to the strains I’m reviewing here, but I trust my sources to label their products correctly. I’m not doing this to call people out or stir shit up, I’m just putting up some of my experiences and opinions. As you’ll see if you read all 31 pages of the thread (I only got to about 10, but the pertinent info is in the first post) the community can get pretty heated about the subject of MMJ genetics, and that’s a fight I’m just not interested in. My generation has grown up with “the war on drugs” so improperly focused, it can skew the reasons people get involved… A shame really.

Marijuana Strain Review: Alien Dawg

Alien Dawg

Medicinal Marijuana : Alien Dawg

Medicinal Marijuana : Alien Dawg

Physical Exam:

Visual Appeal: 8 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Bud Density: 8 (1-10 / airy-dense)
Aroma Intensity: 7 (1-10 / subtle-intense)
Seed Content: 1 (1-10 / none-fully seeded)
Colours Present in Buds: 3 Green / 5 Gold / 2 White / 3 Orange / 1 Red / 1 Purple (1-10 / light-dark)
Present Aromas: 8 Skunk / 2 Hash / 6 Floral / 7 Musk / 3 Diesel (freshly cracked bud | 1-10 / weak-potent)

Comments:

Alien Dawg is a very interesting sativa dominant hybrid. This batch stirred up a little controversy as I saw a strain by the same name @ a dispensary in Toronto, marked as their strongest indica. Through my own testing, a few research sessions, and discussion with my sources it’s pretty clear these aren’t the same batches. From it’s appearance there are some definite indica traits, mainly the density of bud formations and a hint of musk on the nose, but that’s pretty much where the Chemdawg genes kick back in. A strong skunk & floral scent emanates from the grinder while breaking up, and it’s very easy on the eyes… Well trimmed pale green and deep gold buds with dense white trichome coverage… It’s really kind of seductive…

Efficacy Testing:

Utensils Used: Joint / Oracle Infrared Vaporizer (2x Standard 2′ Vapor Bag)
Dosage: ≈0.6g
Sativa Effect: 9 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Indica Effect: 4 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Effect Onset: 4 (1-10 / immediate-creeper)
Potency: 8 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Taste: 9 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Tolerance Build up: 2 (1-10 / none-rapid)
Effect Duration: ≈2 hours
Usability: 7 Morning / 9 Day & Work / 6 Evening / 3 Night (1-10 / worst-ideal time of day)

Comments:

This strain goes beyond refined looks and really makes her effects known. I had a few sessions ‘probing’ the Alien Dawg via joint and/or vaporizer, as well a couple of close (and also federally exempt medicinal marijuana patient) friends helping out with their thoughts.

SESSION REPORT 1:
Smoking a fairly large joint with friends “CB” & “PK” I got the pen & paper out to take some very scribbly notes.

CB – Fruity almost menthol taste, nice tar ring on paper, even burn, overpowered start. Still trying to figure out dominant traits – halfway through the effects have killed “couch-lock” feeling from previous indica session (only 10 mins ago) – harsh throat 2/3rds through – conclusion: sativa dominant.

PK – Didn’t say much, probably because of our previous session. He appeared frozen in time. When we said so and got a laugh he chimed in with “my tongue is tingling, I’m heavily medicated.”

ME – I was taking notes re: CB’s thoughts, so mine had to wait… I did manage to write “good for conversation & definitely woke me up a bit” however.

SESSION REPORT 2:
Time to break out the Oracle Infrared Vaporizer! During my Chemdawg review I felt I should have the whip attachment going, so this time around I was 100% prepared. Broke up the cone shaped tip of a bud (about 0.6g), poured half into the bowl, set the temp to 3′o’clock (380F) and pushed the button.

The bag was full in just over 2 minutes, and I decided against the whip for my first taste. Beautiful. Very fresh and fruity tasting, I felt the effects after just a few hauls. Finishing the light vapor quickly without any strain on my throat or lungs, I fired it up for a second go! Bag 2 filled with much thicker vapor, but had a slight hint of popcorn taste (which happens when the vaporized marijuana has been thoroughly cooked). Again it wasn’t too harsh and I only coughed a little from the last hit.

Because this is science and I enjoy the process, I poured the remaining sample into the bowl, added the hookah stack adapter to the vape, and started up once more. Turning the heat down a notch, the vaporizer ran for about a minute before I started toking from the whip… Still feeling effects from the first bag ramping up, this was clearly overkill. I enjoyed sipping the smooth flavours for a few minutes while the bag also filled with vapors, then retired the whip and went right back in for the bag adapter. There was no cough at all, even with the larger hits offered. Finishing up I was really stoked to come write up this review with a great buzz in my head and just enough indica influence to keep me comfortable.

Conclusion: 8.5/10

Yes please. This is a great example of sativa dominant crosses. It’s effects ramped up over 20-30 minutes and leveled off into a very energetic but relaxed state. It’s a great strain for wake-n-bakes because it’s strong enough to defeat the “couch lock” that can cripple even the nicest of days. I really enjoyed the session with friends who helped relate their feelings, and found it sparks creativity allowing work to be done and conversation to stay lively (until you decide to eat an extra large pizza, then things get eerily quiet for some reason)… Try it if you see it, but be wary of labels… A bit of research and experimentation goes a long way… Either way, trusting yourself and your own reactions will undoubtedly lead you to a strain of Marijuana that helps you enjoy life more.

Marijuana Strain Review: Quadruple O.G. Kush

Quadruple O.G. Kush

Medicinal Marijuana : Quadruple O.G. Kush

Medicinal Marijuana : Quadruple O.G. Kush

Physical Exam:

Visual Appeal: 8 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Bud Density: 8 (1-5 / airy-dense)
Aroma Intensity: 8 (1-10 / subtle-intense)
Seed Content: 1 (1-10 / none-fully seeded)
Colours Present in Buds: 7 Green / 2 Gold / 3 White / 6 Orange / 4 Red / 7 Purple (1-10 / light-dark)
Present Aromas: 5 Skunk / 3 Hash / 5 Floral / 4 Musk / 7 Diesel (freshly cracked bud | 1-10 / weak-potent)

Comments:

Quadruple?! Yep.

This batch came once again from British Columbia, Canada. Making way to me in a sealed jar, I wasn’t taken immediately by the smell, but the this inbred genetic thug made me look more than twice… Slight (but fairly dark) bits of purple creep through the deep greens and oranges, the whole sample was made up of good sized (≈2g) buds, and was expertly trimmed. Once cracking open a nugget I was pleasantly surprised at the familiar “kush kick” and some very heavy skunky funk. Please forgive the wordplay, because this stuff really has “funk”… Sitting beside me while I type, it keeps wafting by my nose and has literally made my mouth water.

Efficacy Testing:

Utensils Used: Joint (Pure Hemp 1.25″ Unbleached + Card Filter)
Dosage: 0.5g
Sativa Effect: 3 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Indica Effect: 8 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Effect Onset: 2 (1-10 / immediate-creeper)
Potency: 8 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Taste: 8 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Tolerance Build up: 2 (1-10 / none-rapid)
Effect Duration: ≈2 hours
Usability: 2 Morning / 4 Day & Work / 9 Evening / 8 Night (1-10 / worst-ideal time of day)

Comments:

Medication Testing Session: Play-by-Play!

4:45 – Thin Stems (highly snappable) grind up into the rest, super well cured and stinky.
4:49 – Rolled & Ready. I’m not a huge fan of these papers, but they work.
4:49 – Sparked. Beautiful musky/skunky taste to the smoke
4:50 – Burning evenly but kinda quick. Thick black ring under the cherry.
*coughing
4:52 – Small coughing fit, lots of weight in my temples.
4:53 – Still have a tickle in my lungs, must be smoke expanding. On every haul.
4:53 – Almost half through, coughs sending pain through my back and leg. Smaller hauls.
4:54 – Feeling a bright buzz in my eyes. Smoke still tastes incredible.
*coughing
4:55 – I wish I could stop the coughing, it really aggravates my back. Shoulda vaped.
4:56 – Shoulder stretch feels great, can feel looseness in my hands.
*coughing
4:57 – Coughing doesn’t hurt for as long after, my muscles are definitely relaxing.
4:58 – Adjusted position, pretty comfortable considering initial pain threshold.
4:59 – Near roach, bitter change to taste, kinda like burnt pancakes. I think I’m done.
*coughing
5:00 – Squeezed out a couple more hauls. Probably shouldn’t have, but it brought a big rush of warmth to my head. Kinda hurt while coughing, but such is the nature of medicating through such an enjoyable method as smoking.

Conclusion: 9/10

But maybe a 9.5? I need a better camera and a magnification scope. I also wish there was more information about this strain available, but respectfully the community of growers do their work behind closed doors (most of the time) so details are often hazy. What I could muster up was that this is as indica as it gets. Back-crossing the original O.G. Kush with itself. It may be incest, but it works… Smoking and vaporizing Quad O.G. has been excellent for my (especially angry right now) back injury. It numbs and relaxes my body well past the point of distraction, and because of the “couch-lock” contained within, definitely makes it easy to rest (and not write). After work, before bed, or anytime to take a painful edge off, this is the stuff.

Medicinal Marijuana : Quadruple O.G. Kush

Note: Once again, I waited until the very last nug of my batch to write this review. I’ve been fighting off back-spasms for the past week or so, and the Quad OG‘s 100% indica effects from this strain are a blessing… Check out the Headband Kush review and my Purple Chemo review for some more indica dominant greatness!

Big Machines

When I was a kid, I was all about big machines. Loved em. Wanted to see em work, build, destroy, move, fly, whatever… The bigger, the better.

My buddy Erik is kinda living the dream… He’s surrounded by some of the coolest big machines our world has to offer: Airplanes.

He takes pictures of them, and blogs about it… Go look!

Marijuana Strain Review: Black Domina

Black Domina

Medicinal Marijuana : Black Domina

Medicinal Marijuana : Black Domina

Physical Exam:

Visual Appeal: 9 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Bud Density: 7 (1-5 / airy-dense)
Aroma Intensity: 8 (1-10 / subtle-intense)
Seed Content: 1 (1-10 / none-fully seeded)
Colours Present in Buds: 6 Green / 8 Gold / 6 White / 3 Orange / 2 Red / 3 Purple (1-10 / light-dark)
Present Aromas: 6 Skunk / 3 Hash / 6 Floral / 5 Musk / 8 Diesel (freshly cracked bud | 1-10 / weak-potent)

Comments:

Wow. Opening up the container this arrived in left me near speechless. I was greeted by a super-stinky 10.9g bud of the incredible looking medicinal grade plant, easily one of the nicest I’ve come across in a long time. This being my first exposure to Black Domina I was really excited, having done a little research into its bloodlines and knowing my penchant for indica dominant plants… Strong afghani genetics have formed this strain into an absolute indica monster. As you’ll see in the pics, the sample is absolutely top-of-the-line. A “thick coating” of trichromes would be an understatement as the huge cola was nearly too pretty to smoke. The stems still have some moisture content (not quite snappable) and the oversize resin glands make it a bit tougher to break up as it sticks to itself and anything it touches. Pulling open my test nugget revealed a pungent and enticing kick on the nose, almost acidic with hints of flower & black pepper.

Efficacy Testing:

Utensils Used: Joint (DLX 1.25″ paper & cardboard filter)
Dosage: 0.5g
Sativa Effect: 5 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Indica Effect: 8 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Effect Onset: 1 (1-10 / immediate-creeper)
Potency: 8 (1-10 / none-heavy)
Taste: 9 (1-10 / unpleasant-superb)
Tolerance Build up: 1 (1-10 / none-rapid)
Effect Duration: ≈2 hours
Usability: 4 Morning / 5 Day & Work / 9 Evening / 7 Night (1-10 / worst-ideal time of day)

Comments:

I’ve found that reviewing indica strains is best done with the play-by-play method. Trying to recall a full paragraph worth of specific, and more importantly ACCURATE info can be a little daunting!

The following is a minute-to-minute report on my findings and feelings, as they happened.

4:58 – Quick roll. I wish it was trimmed better, but the leaves are covered in crystal, so it’s cool.
5:01 – Spark it up! Awesome rush of peppery flavour, thick white smoke spiraling out right away.
5:01 – Southern Fried Stings is some of the worst TV I’ve ever seen.
5:02 – Already feeling sweats on the forehead. Clean burn to very white ash.
5:03 – Smoke expanding in lungs, eyes catching a bit of weight. Sweats confirmed bigtime.
5:04 – Taste is still incredibly nice, almost like an artificial flavour. Burns in my nose a bit.
5:06 – Just about halfway through, haven’t coughed yet, but super comfy in my chair.
*coughing
5:07 – The smoke is thick, my face is flush, i don’t feel any pain. Arms are sweating. Is it hot in here?
5:08 – Seriously, Southern Fried Stings shouldn’t even be on TV. What a crock.
5:09 – 1/3rd left, burning super evenly, starting to cloud behind my eyes more
*coughing
5:10 – Normally a fit like that would hurt my back and kick off a spasm, but I feel ok.
5:11 – Cleaned it up for a couple more hauls, getting a little harsher on big hits.
5:12 – Put it out. Answered a chat message, I gotta do some work… I think I’m up for it.

Medicinal Marijuana - Black Domina

Conclusion: 9/10

I really hope this strain makes its way into regular rotation. Though I’d heard of it, this was my first chance to try it for myself, and I found it to be exactly strong enough to calm the angry muscles in my back. It doesn’t leave me too confused, but the relaxation and mood-elevation definitely can’t be overlooked. It’s not the best thing for a wake-n-bake as I found it very easy to take a nap after a couple vapor bags, but waking up sore or in a bad mood, this is a great go-to. It looks great, tastes great, burns great, and is just through-and-through an excellent strain. Pick it up, especially if you’re looking for a new indica outside of kush crosses.

Medicinal Marijuana - Black Domina

Note: I only review marijuana that is of the highest quality. I also don’t give 10′s. This is an uphill battle for any strain/grower, but one I’m proud and happy to keep working on. Somebody has to be a hardass. Stay tuned for more, and contact me if you want a writeup.
